In memoriam Che Guevara

In Chile, in the city of Santiago, a statue of Ernesto Che Guevara was removed from its pedestal and sent to be melted down.

Che Guevara is being tortured again,
what do you torment metal for?!
At the stake, above a crowd of frenzied dogs1,
he remains silent, as he would when alive.

They torture him red, white hot
only to reveal his heart through translucent metal2.
The outlines of the sculpture melt,
but they can't manage to destroy3 him!

I am Ernesto, the son of light,
I rose from oblivion,
And I shall glow red
forever more!4

There is no such melting point,
you won't find such furnaces!
Freedom has patience to boot,
instead of moans, a stream of light.

But on the square, in naked horror,
where nothing but ashes remain,
the black wind of terror stirs
a forest of resurrected hands!

I am Ernesto, the son of light,
I rose from oblivion,
And I shall glow red
forever more!

Che Guevara is being tortured again,
what do you torment metal for?!
At the stake, above a crowd of frenzied dogs,
he remains silent, as he would when alive.

They torture him red, white hot
only to reveal his heart through translucent metal.
The outlines of the sculpture melt,
but they can't manage to destroy him!

I am Ernesto, the son of light,
I rose from oblivion,
And I shall glow red
forever more!

I shall walk the earth again,
all out in bloody struggle and love
for Allende and Neruda,
and bright sunlight!

  • 1. lit. something like "an orgy of wild dogs"
  • 2. the Rusian says it quite differently but that's the idea
  • 3. "melt him down" but I couldn't find two different words in English
  • 4. "I will never get out of my red state/condition"

Что вы мучаете металл?! - что = почему, зачем

Разгул: https://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/seksolog/1942

Где лишь пепел один вокруг, - more like where there’s only ashes around

И за солнечный луч в крови - lit. For the ray of the sun in blood - в борьбе и любви за луч...

Что вы мучаете металл -> I guess "what do you..." works in English too, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
EDIT: dang, I had forgotten the "for". Sorry.

над разгулом псовым -> frankly I don't get it. How would you put that in English? "the ferocious/frantic barking of dogs" or something?

Где лишь пепел один вокруг -> I don't really understand the "один" but apparently that means "nothing but" here, like "the only material left on the square is ash" or something?

И за солнечный луч в крови -> Oops, I misunderstood the "за".

Разгул псовый I understand as ‘wild dogs orgy’

Пепел один = только пепел = ничего, кроме пепла, so yes, this is what it means

Пепел один -> ok thanks, makes perfect sense.

"wild dogs orgy" -> no way I can use that Teeth smile
I have no doubt that sounds ok in an emotional language like Russian, but in English it feels so over the top it would sound rather funny than epic, in my view.
Maybe "frenzied dogs" or something like that? With the orgy safely locked in a footnote? Regular smile

Teeth smile

“bacchanalia” would be too festive too? ‘Frenzy” sounds too gentle for those dogs, but is totally your choice

Haha I went for "a crowd of frenzied dogs". The "crowd" adds a touch of contempt Regular smile

And what about this rephrasing of "Стал прозрачным, лишь сердце одно."?
That might be a bit far-fetched, but I suppose that's the general idea, or did I get it wrong?

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 02:41

The Russian doesn’t sound right, it is like the heart needs a verb, let me listen
UPDATE - yes, sounds like this. Anyway, I think you are fine, it’s metaphorical in Russian also. Literally, it is “he became translucent, only his heart left [visible?]”, so, like they will not be able to ‘melt’ his heart, his soul...

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 02:42

Phew... That's what I thought too but I was afraid that was just wishful thinking.
That should be it I guess. Or do you see some problems left?

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 02:56

No, and I think ‘a crowd’ works perfectly, if ‘orgy’ makes you uncomfortable, remove it from the footnotes

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 03:02

No no, I'm all for explaining things. I just tried to find an "epic" sweet spot for the English Regular smile
