Я выбираю тебя (Ya vibirayu tebya)

I choose you

Versions: #1#2
My strength is of the slow kind1, I can't imagine a life without you.
It feels like walking on broken glass yet again.
The past hides behind the days' back.
It's again the day by day routine
where you kiss dawns with hands raised to the sky.
I want to be there too.2

I choose you, choose you.
For you I'll stop the Earth3 spinning.
I choose you, choose you.
You are a prisoner of my sweet victories.
I choose you, choose you.
For you I'll stop the Earth spinning.
I choose you, choose you.
You are a prisoner of my sweet victories.

Sunlight sparkles on your eyelashes.
What was meant to be had to happen.
Telegrams about the drama will fly through the night.
And we don'f forget the sadness.
Better gather the shards4 and shelve them5.
I just want to love.

I choose you, choose you.
For you I'll stop the Earth spinning.
I choose you, choose you.
You are a prisoner of my sweet victories.
I choose you, choose you.
For you I'll stop the Earth spinning.
I choose you, choose you.
You are a prisoner of my sweet victories.

  • 1. lit. "my strength is slow" but I suppose she means she will win him over by being persistent
  • 2. she actually says "хочу быть там и я"
  • 3. she might say "the planets" instead of "the planet" but the idea remains the same
  • 4. of their former ill-fated love story
  • 5. as "get over it"

Thank you! Even though some things are not 100% I understand the meaning of the song. I once got a translation on one of my requests and tbh I still doesn’t know exactly what that song is about. Thank you again for taking your time :)

Also about 3, maybe she means she wants to become one with the person she sings to, share a soul or something (like a metaphor of some kind?).

Hi, I'm native, as for the translation, it's brilliant, except "You [are leaning] on the shoulder of my sweet victories.", but it's only my opinion, maybe I'm wrong. As for the song itself, I read it for several times and still it's hard to get any clear picture in my mind what it is all about. I can't right now listen to it. I will do it a bit later and maybe it's just little typos that don't let us to get the picture.

How about this liryc, if is deficated what he mean?

CClau    Fri, 26/10/2018 - 22:40

I need to know the significance

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 26/10/2018 - 22:49

I can assure you this song is not about defecation, and I don't think anyone involved in this discussion tought about that.

Saluton    Fri, 26/10/2018 - 15:32

Slow strength → The strength is slow
It's like I walked → It's like I'm walking
embrace dawns → kiss dawns
I want to be you → I want to be there too (she sings "хочу быть там и я")
I'm choosing you → I choose you (the most important thing about the translation, it's a one-time act, not a continuous action)
For you, I'll stop the world in its tracks → I'll stop the planet for you ("planet" and "world" are not quite the same thing)
You [are leaning] on the shoulder of → You are a prisoner of (you just mixed up плену with плечу)
And you shan't forget sadness → And we won't forget the sadness (not sure why you used "shall" and not quite clear whose "sadness" the lyricist means, but I think it refers to both "parties")
gather the debris and store them on shelves → gather the fragments and put them on shelves ("debris" refers to scrap, not to broken love that she means)

Hi again!
I got home and I finally was able to listen to the song and watch the video. Yes, as well as Saluton I can hear "Хочу быть там и я" instead of "Хочу быть тобой я". I also hear "Остановлю для тебя планетЫ". And more, at the end of song, when a man is singing at the background, I can hear "Я выбираю тебя, выбираю тебя. Я глазами твоими раздета." But all this may be of a little importance.
Speaking of the sense of the lyrics... Here is how I see this.
Listening to songs I noticed, that all of them, without exceptions, tend to be about Love. That is why we hear in this song "Где ты целуешь рассветы", "Ты в плену моих сладких побед", "Хочу лишь я любить". But obviously, for those who write songs, just love is not enough, they want something else, some philosophy maybe. That is why a second thread often appears in songs. Have you noticed how the singing girl is dressed, and how she is watching the man from afar, making moves with her hands and sometime trying in a panthera-like way to approach him? I guess the authors of the song wanted to show us some goddess,a metaphor maybe for Live or Death, or Fate, Doom, Fortune, Destiny. I believe she is Fate. That is why we see in the video some archeologist, that's why there are lots of sand, even a sand-strorm and he is racing away from it. That is why we hear "Прошлое прячется", "Я выбираю тебя", "Остановлю для тебя планеты", "Ты в плену моих сладких побед" (You're a prisoner of my sweet victories), and the main phrase "То, чему было дано, должно было случится."
That's how I see the song. But it's only my seeing, yours may differ.
Thanks for the song, and the translation, they are great! Regular smile

Thank you all for these helpful remarks, and sorry about this silly prison/shoulder mistake Regular smile

How does it look now?

Andrew Parfen    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:14

I still have a feeling that "обломки" could have a better translation, but somehow it's hard to explain it. Even "debris" sounded for me better than pieces. As we hear above there is a drama, telegrams and sadness, it might be telling us about an accident, so then it's maybe debris, wreckage, detritus. On the other hand, if the song is allegoric, than it might be "remains" or "ruins". Well, it's just my personal feeling, and every one might have a different opinion on that, so it really doesn't matter, let them be pieces.
And I agree on Saluton's " And we won't forget the sadness". The meaning of that part of the story, as I see it, is: an accident has happend, or speaking in terms of allegory, some tragedy in one's life (could be a bad luck in love, mariage, or even a death of a dear one), and we can't do anything with, we'll alwas keep it in memories, we won't be able to forget it, all we can do, it's to accept it, shelve it, and make peace with it.
Well, I have to reapet, those are my personal feelings, and every one can have his own vision, and the discussion can go on forever. The translation is quite good, I just kind of went too deep into the song. D)

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:30

What about "shards" (of a broken dream) or "remnants" (of a defunct love) ?

Igeethecat    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:40

Shards are better than remnants IMHO. Remnants == what is left of ‘whatever’, here she is gathering the pieces. Regular smile

And “surroundings” in the other song sound fine to me Wink smile

Andrew Parfen    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:48

Well, I'm not sure already. When I think over something for too long, the meanings of words get blurry in my mind. I think we might leave pieces, give it a break, and think again in a while. Or may be someone's fresh look would help us.

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:52

I've followed Maria's advice. I think it sounds OK in English and that seems to convey the general idea (getting over it).
It matches the image of walking on broken glass too, even though that might not be the case in the original.

Igeethecat    Fri, 26/10/2018 - 20:04

May be it is just me, but in Russian "расставить по полкам (расставить по своим местам)" means "to put things in order", like when you put books on the shelf in alphabetical order or put merchandise on the shelves in the store.
In English, there is an idiomatic expression "(to put/to be, etc.) on the shelf" meaning "(to put/to be, etc.) out of use" Wink smile

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 26/10/2018 - 20:07

like "turning the page" or "getting over it" ?
Maybe "shelve them" could work here?

I like your translation for it's deep insight and the way your english flow. It's really nice!

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 27/10/2018 - 04:25

Thank you very much.
This translation was saved by helpful people, they deserve the 5th star more than I do.

Dawndancer    Sun, 28/10/2018 - 12:45

Thank you everyone Regular smile
I didn’t write down the lyrics myself so there must have been a mishearing from where I found them. I could probably have heard ut if I listened a bit more closely but not that good in Russian. Actually the lyrics makes more sense now Regular smile

Andrew Parfen    Sun, 28/10/2018 - 13:17

I'd say if not for the video, we could hardly figure out what this song is about Regular smile
