Reaper (Russian translation)

Versions: #1#2

Author's comments:

The translation was made according to lyrics from LyricsGenius, see here, which I find more correct, thanks to ingirumimusnocte!
This translation wouldn't be good, if not for these greate people: Igeethecat, ingirumimusnocte, BlackSea4ever, Kashtanka1965, Flopsi, Gavin. Thank you very much, guys!

Igeethecat    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 05:17

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 05:24

Frankly I gave up trying to translate her songs, the lyrics lie far beyond my understanding.
Still I agree it's about the grim reaper, there is little doubt about that.

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 06:39

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 06:49

Actually the French translation uses "faucheuse", a common local name of the Grim Reaper. On the other hand it uses masculine all along while the "faucheuse" is feminine.

"come back when I'm good to go" is rather hinting at death. "oh baby..." would hint at whatever boyfriend of hers.

I don't really see the point in talking to death like to a teenage boy or calling a boyfriend "reaper", but what the heck, it's her music, not mine...

Kashtanka1965    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 06:02

I don't think she is singing about the death. You wouldn't call the Death baby. It's all about someone, who follows her and trying to track her down. She will eventually be with him, but for now she wants to play around. I could be wrong, but...

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 08:22

Yes, I agree, this option can not be exluded. Many songs are written in such way, that there may be two scenarios. The singer sings about his feelings and to make it more dramatic makes up such comparisons with like Reapers etcetera. But still, look up the previous two or three lines, to see, that she is talking not to her exlover or whoever he might be

Flopsi    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 06:27

The way I see it she's flirting with him: "Come on sweetie, I'll be a good girl, come for me if I'm ready to go."

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 06:34

Oh well, that's why I gave up translating her songs. I suppose you'd need to browse through songfacts and lyrics genius and songmeanings to collect some lore about her personal life that might give you some clues about what she's actually talking about Regular smile

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 07:06

Folks, thank you all for comenting. Could you please put some light on that line too: "Sun rays out the corner of my eye, hey"? I'm not sure I understood it right. Is it about sun rays reflected from her eyes when she's dead, or is it the rays of hope, that she grasped at that moment?

BlackSea4ever    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 07:21

Andrew, I believe she falls down seeing first rays of su out of corner of her eye as reiterated in another line after. I tend to agree that Death is coming for her. I wonder if you are happy with малыш - I think maybe, дорогой/я?

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 08:54

BkackSea, I think you are right about the sun rays, the song already bears too much of desperation that it would be unfair to deprive the girl of the sun rays at dawn. And I will think over the малыш/дорогой-issue. I am leaning towards Igeethecat's suggestion to replace Reaper to Angel of Death. I believe that would resolve some contradictory issues in the translation. I wonder if it's an Angel (even though of Death), probably she may addres to him as baby? Thank you for your rimarks!

Ok, here we go:

This is Acting is an album of songs Sia wrote for other artists, but for whatever reason were rejected. "Reaper" she wrote for Rihanna.
Kanye West wrote this song with Sia, although the collaboration wasn't very collaborative. Sia says she showed up at the studio to work on the song with West, but he wasn't there. West had left her a track and some notes, and Sia did her thing, adding melody and lyrics.
Sia doesn't have a strong connection to many of the pop songs she writes that were meant for other artists. This one would have been left for dead if her manager didn't push her to include it on This is Acting. She told Rolling Stone: "I'm not emotionally attached to it. I thought it was a fun song. I think it's a good, fun song, but I didn't anticipate it being on the record. But my manager really likes it so I put it on for him."
Sia and Kanye West also teamed up for Yeezy's track "Wolves" along with Vic Mensa. The trio performed that song during Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary special on February 15, 2015.

For me, this song is about depression 'talking' you into committing suicide. But no, she's feeling good and she Has a lot more to see, do and feels still! She's not ready to die, even though her depression says she is. I absolutely love this song, because at first it just sounds like a nice pop song but when you listen to it closely, you find the meaning behind it.
My Opinion:
If I were on my left mind I would think this song talks about being young but afraid of death, the fear of dying too young, almost like Sia is looking back at all the possibilities of death and looking at that shadow and just telling it not today I still wanna do more in my life, she doesn't want to die alone and doing nothing she would rather be with a man in her arms or a drink in her hand, anything besides dying alone, where she also keeps saying you tried to track me down and followed me like the darkest cloud.

but in my own thinking looking at how no one knew who Sia was and who she is, the media became so obsessed with her and wanting to see her, she wanted a private life so much almost as though she was afraid of being reaped apart by the world and the media. That could be the reason why she wrote the song and now she opens up about how they become so obsessed with her and she probably regards them as reapers who came to take her away. But I could be wrong.

Originally written for Rihanna’s album ANTi, “Reaper” was later scrapped. Sia talked about the process with Rolling Stone Magazine:

They’ll entice me into a session by saying, “Rihanna will definitely be there” or “Kanye will definitely be there,” but it’s hilarious because I turn up and, almost always, they never come. So I went into the studio to write for Rihanna with Kanye and neither of them showed up and stayed for less than an hour. They had two tracks. They told me what they had wanted. There were notes from Kanye, and I can’t even remember what they were. I remember I just raced in and raced out, and I thought there was something about the chorus that seemed fun about this song.

Sia continued to talk about the track with Rolling Stone, stating she doesn’t have strong feelings for the song:

I don’t care about the song. I know in print that will look bad, but what I mean is I’m not emotionally attached to it. I thought it was a fun song. I think it’s a good, fun song, but I didn’t anticipate it being on the record. But my manager really likes it so I put it on for him.

“Reaper” appears on Sia’s seventh studio album, This Is Acting.

Some days out the corner of my eye, hey
Saw you weeping, saw you creeping
Saw you sneaking in the shadow's long
The fear so strong
Saw you out the corner of my eye ->
Reaper, short for The Grim Reaper, is a personification of death in the form of a cloaked skeleton wielding a large scythe (hence the song’s title).
Death’s presence has always been inescapable to her, terrifying her but never finally ending her life. She could never shake the Reaper from her field of vision.

Don't come for me today
I'm feeling good
I'mma savor it
Don't come for me today
I'm feeling good
I remember when
(Reaper) -> Sia tells death that she isn’t ready to give up her life and her battle. She’s empowered, she’s finding happiness and a reason to continue her journey.

my personal conclusions:

- Sia doesn't give a damn about that particular song
- According to her, it's supposed to be funny (esp. the chorus)
- She botched it in a few minutes, based on some notes scribbled by Kanye West (whoever that might be)
- The Internet fan base seems to think it's rather about death.

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 09:05

Ingirumi...:), thank you for such a long thriller, I really appreciate that! And thank you for your personal thoughts about the song! It was very interesting, I would never know about all this if not for you. I wonder why are you writing "Some days out the corner of my eye", when it's "Sun rays out...."? Is there any mistake in the original lyrics that we are not aware?

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 10:13

I just copied the LyricsGenius transcription. I'd say their sources are usually better than the trash you're likely to pick up on a random lyrics site.

I don't want to say too many bad things about Sia, but frankly I wouldn't spend too much time digging into the meaning of a particular sentence from her lyrics.

If you want my opinion, "some rays out the corner of my eye" sounds like broken English to me and would require a great leap of imagination to make sense. On the other hand, "some days, out the corner of my eye, (I) saw you weeping, creeping.." does make sense.

Well, actually picturing death weeping doesn't make that much sense to me, but at least the sentence sounds like basic standard English.

But I'm French, so my opinion has little or no value compared to a native's.

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 17:23

ingirumimusnocte, I just listened attentively several times to the song by means of WorkAudioBook from Googlplay and I think the lyrics from the LyricsGenius are the right ones. The LT which are here should be replaced as follows: Sun rays - Some days; in the shadows dawn - in the shadow's long; I feel so strong - The fear so strong; when I'm good to go - when I'm good and old. Thank you for the LyricsGenius!

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 16:42

You're welcome. Pretty good site, IMO. Lyrics are rarely off and comments often informative and to the point.

Andrew Parfen    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 10:51

Yes, "some rays out of corner of my eyes" sounds to me weird as well, but I'm not an expert in modern spoken english, so I just thought that I simply dont' understand. And the word "weeping" I translated into russian something like "leaking through", as I found that difinition in my dictionary. And you are right the lyrics here are very different from those at LyricsGenius. Sia sings by such a voice, that sometimes it's difficult to hear her prononciation of some words.I wish someone with a good ear would listen out her song! Thank you, Ingiru...!

Igeethecat    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 12:56

Weep - плакать, лить слёзы might work here better, than сочиться Wink smile
And you could use just ‘Ангел’ in LT and explain Смерть в сносках (just like she did). Just a suggestion

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:10

Teeth smile

Andrew Parfen    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:19

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:26

Are you kidding me?
So you'll be sitting on your suitcase, and then one fine day the Grim Reaper will come to you and slice your neck with his scythe.
Sad smile

Andrew Parfen    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:32

Bite your tongue!

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:34

I vote for Baba Yaga. Sia herself said the song was supposed to be funny, remember? Wink smile

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 04:50

Oops, it was a joke, Teeth smile

Igeethecat    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 05:10

And about funny - we already have it, IMHO:
(Ангел) Ох, Ангел. — (Ahhh, Angel)
— (Ahhh no, honey, not today)
Almost “Sector Gaza”. Teeth smile

I suggest to change «Ох» на «Ой» (Ahhh to Aye) :
Aye, it is so good, but not well at all! (From Russian 80-s pop classic)

Ok, it’s time for me to shut up, maybe Regular smile

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:34

About "weeping", that might mean "oozing" or "seeping" like blood from a wound or whatever gruesome bodily fluid from whatever gruesome disease, but using that for a being like death or a person seems a bit far-fetched to me. I mean, if that's what she meant, why didn't she just put "'oozing" instead?
I guess it's time to call a native to the rescue Regular smile
@Gavin? Pretty please?

Gavin    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:39

Oh I would say that meant crying there (pleurer) - weeping tears.
Weeping would only mean oozing if immediately followed by "sores" or "wound" or something like that.

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 16:03

Right, so once in a while, she caught a glimpse of either death or her boyfriend weeping, creeping, etc. ?

Her potential boyfriend can do whatever he pleases, but I still don't see why death would want to weep there. Does that ring a bell to you?

Flopsi    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:42

I guess only a depressed person can see death as a person, a friend? I see him weeping because he loves her and hates taking her life - if she really longed for him, he spares her because when he takes her life her longing will be gone just like her.
I guess it takes a twisted mind to understand lyrics like these.

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:45

Hahaha as for me, I think Sia just whipped up a nice piece of nonsense there. But I'm being naughty again, sorry.

Gavin    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:46

Hey Kanye (or Ye) was involved too and he's a genius. If he says so himself...

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:49

I stand corrected; I'm being naughty *and* arrogant.

Gavin    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:51

Au piquet ! Wink smile

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 16:07

Don't turn up the heat on me, or I'll soon add rudeness to naughtiness and arrogance.

Gavin    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:45

Well all those "reapers" certainly point to death but maybe it's trying to work on two levels.
Don't you come for me today... sure sounds like someone saying they're not ready to die.

ingirumimusnocte    Fri, 12/10/2018 - 15:47

Even the Discworld's death wouldn't weep, and yet you can hardly find a more likeable reaper Regular smile

Andrew Parfen    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 03:49

Guys, I made some corrections to the translation! Thank you all for you brilliant remarks and suggestions, I love you all! Heart
I changed the meaning of some lines according to lyrics from LyricsGenius, see here, which I find more correct, thanks to ingirumimusnocte! They are:
Sun rays - Some days;
in the shadows dawn - in the shadow's long;
I feel so strong - The fear so strong;
when I'm good to go - when I'm good and old
I hope you'ld find the translation much better now!

sandring    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 05:14

Broke down, thought that I wouldn't drown
Will God be found, 'fore I hit the ground
Some days are out of the corner of my eye, hey
So you're weeping, so you're creeping
So you're sneaking in the chador's dawn
I feel so strong
So you're out of the corner of my eye

LyricsGenius is full of crappy transcriptions.

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 05:53

"sneaking in the chador's dawn" ???

Giving Sia's lyrics a wide berth is probably one of the wisest decisions I ever took Teeth smile
I think my next motto will be "if Lyricsgenius can't transcribe it, then don't translate it" Teeth smile Teeth smile Teeth smile

sandring    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 05:16

I think I should transcribe it properly.

sandring    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 06:43

The source lyrics have been updated. Please review your translation.

sandring    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 06:48

Lyricsgenius is no good at all, just believe me. If you remember the Reaper's image you can see that chador on his eyes. I've transcribed the lyrics, now the singer's point shines through in every word.

ingirumimusnocte    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 06:57

Frankly that kind of lyrics is about the opposite of my cup of tea.
I rather like stories where grim reapers just wear plain robes and chadors have no dawn. Even better when they don't weep.
Having them speak in capitals is a plus too Regular smile

sandring    Sat, 13/10/2018 - 07:04

I'll translate that myself. Then everything will be clear. To me, the message is as clear as day when the lyrics are correct. As for the Lyricsgenius, their system of transcribing may be called 'When the deaf verify the deaf" Btw, very soon you'll see the lyrics above on their site. They are quick, I've noticed Regular smile
