només passegen pels meus somnis d'amor
Cor solitari és l'amor (solitari amor)
ara estic sola...

English translation

I Wanted It To Be Us

From the moment I met you,
My heart was filled with your light
Love causes me such a pain
I opened my eyes and wanted silence all around
Your little gestures
And your, oh so much, little talk
Everytime I think about them
I hurt and I cry for you
Love is a lonely heart (Lonely love)
Now I'm alone, lonely like the heart (Lonely like the heart)
All the joy and the pain I'm feeling inside
Wander to my love dreams
Love is a lonely heart (Lonely love)
Now I'm alone

What does the line "And your so much common speak" mean?

Floppylou    Wed, 31/10/2018 - 10:11

My bad, it's not "speak" but "speech"...

Sailor PokeMoon2    Wed, 31/10/2018 - 10:16

I also thought that you had meant to say "speech" but I had wanted to ask first. Anyway it's OK mistakes happen Regular smile

I do not know Catalan, but English is my native language.

If someone says, "from the moment I met you", that happened in the past. I met you earlier today or yesterday or three years ago. It happened in the past.

So in English, you would say "my heart was [past tense] with your". . . .Even though the heart is still presently filled with light or love or whatever else, it started in the past. So it is customary for past tense to accompany phrases like "from the moment I met you".

More examples: "the first time ever I saw your face, i thought the sun rose in your eyes. . . .the first time ever I kissed your mouth, i felt the earth move." -Roberta Flack

It is similar in meaning to Spanish 'hace dos años que vivo aquí', but with opposite tenses.

Hi !
Thanks a lot for this explanation. English isn't my first language (neither Catalan nor Spanish by the way). I've made the right changes. Regular smile

Insignificant guestures and common speech - Would you please explain the meaning of the Catalan phrase from which you translate?

I suspect that "insignificant" has a different nuance or connotation in Catalan. Using the English word insignificant implies worthless and would hurt someone's feelings.

I suspect these phrases might be more equivalent to English "the little things you do and say". In this context, "little" is used affectionately.

Floppylou    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 06:03

For "insignificant", I've searched because I was pretty sure it meant something "bad" (like in French), and it was ( But in this context, I'll change the translation to have one more friendly with his friend.

filled with your lights -> plutôt "light" au singulier, sinon ça fait penser à des phares !

I open my eyes and wanted silence all around -> opened/wanted ou open/want

Your insignifiant gestures -> "insignificant" est plutôt péjoratif (négligeable, sans valeur...). Je dirais plutôt "small gestures"

And your, so much, common speech -> tu veux dire "conversation courante"? "common speech" c'est plutôt une langue commune ou le langage courant. Plutôt "casual talk" ou "casual conversation", je dirais

Floppylou    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 06:06

Merci pour ces précisions, j'ai changé les phrases concernées Regular smile

I hope i have not discouraged you. You are a good English translator.

I will tell you a funny story. My friend Antonio went on vacation, and when he came back to work, he had a mustache.

I was learning Spanish, and so I said, "Tony me gusta su mostaza. i thought i was saying, "i like your mustache". He said, "You're crazy!" Because mostaza means mustard.

So to summarize, I walked into a room at work, saw Tony for the first time in two weeks, and told him excitedly that I liked his mustard. Wink smile

Reminds me of the time when I asked for some paper handkerchiefs in Russia. The girl behind the counter said "we don't have those but you can find the real stuff in the park". As it turns out, I had asked for "paper grass".
The two words have but one vowel in common, yet somehow I managed to mix them up at the worst possible moment!
It just takes a bit of time for the vocabulary to sink in, that's all Regular smile

BreezyDay    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 01:10

That's hilarious. There must be a book somewhere with more stories like these.

ingirumimusnocte    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 01:28

I don't know if someone already thought of this, but that could make a funny forum topic. "your best language blunders" or something?

BreezyDay    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 01:52

Great idea. If you want, you could start it now. Otherwise, I'll do it tomorrow when I can use a computer.

BreezyDay    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 03:23

Okay I'll start it.

I think if it had already been done in the last year or two, you would have seen it.

So I don't think there's a need to search for something that already exists. It would be old.

At this point surely there are plenty of new stories to tell. . .

On my resume for the 1st job as a programmer, I wrote I had exceptional analytical skills. Of course, I thought it meant minimal. At the interview they asked me whether I truly think I have exceptional skills. I truly did think I had minimal analytical skills so I was able to look them in the eye and confirm just so. The rest is history... I have exceptional analytical skills.... Lol

ingirumimusnocte    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 02:35

Don't get me started on programming either, I could rant about C++ ugliness for hours.

ingirumimusnocte    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 04:22

PM me if you want to know all about my hate-love relationship with C++ Regular smile

BlackSea4ever    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 01:28

There is nothing, not even a sexy French accent that will move me to talk about C++

Floppylou    Wed, 07/11/2018 - 06:10

You didn't discouraged me ahah, I'm pretty subborn.
I'd like to thank you all to take time to explain those mistakes to me, because those two languages aren't my native one. I try to improve but, well, shit happens Regular smile

Your story is funny ! I've had similar one with an english-speaker tourist in a gite. He asked for the bathroom, and I show him the "bath" room, whereas he was looking for the toilets ... :')

Sailor PokeMoon2    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 02:17

Wow! This comments section was REALLY popular! I hadn't realistic it! Thank you everybody for your help and for your funny awkward stories!

BlackSea4ever    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 02:19

I hadn't realized Or I didn't realize.

Our stories may not sound realistic, but they are.

Lol. Little language lesson

BreezyDay    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 02:30

Or was it a beloved case of autospell taking control! Makes me insane. My phone always changes food to good.

BlackSea4ever    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 02:32

Lol, know what you mean. Hate doing viber on iPad - the latter always "knows" better what I mean

BreezyDay    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 18:51

ha ha, I never thought of that

Sailor PokeMoon2    Thu, 08/11/2018 - 03:02

Ugh! Audospell got me! As for the realized question you asked... My answer is both lol
