Dyevushka (Девушка) (English translation)

English translation

I brooded in the restaurant and drank myself silly
while the band played one dirge after the other.
I saw this chick and I got the shakes.
You went away, I smoked half a pack,
wolfed down my pretty gruesome grilled beef
and ran after you in a hurry like a savage.
Girl, girl! Don't hurry like that!
I'm with you! Just let me give a lousy tip to the waiter!
Girl, girl! I'll grab a cab!
Don't give me the cold shoulder1!
We sat on a bench, you were shy,
I decided to seat next to you until dark,
but the stinking grilled beef made itself pretty conspicuous,
so hard that it sent a shiver down my spine.
I went pale as a sheet and said "Be back in a sec!"
You answered tenderly "darling, I'd rather stay here a bit longer"
Girl, girl! I'll be only a minute!
I won't get far, I just need a little rest in the bushes.
Girl, girl! I'm in for a number two.
The grilled beef was really high!
We sat there like Beavis and Butt-Head2.
It's not my fault if I had to take a crap.
I squatted in the bushes and eagerly relieved myself.
I immediately felt better and wanted to be with you again.
But you ducked out just like that,
and I yelled again "Girl, girl, don't be in such a hurry!"
Girl, don't walk away so fast,
it's just nature, it could happen to anyone.
Girl, girl, I've got the runs,
don't wrinkle your nose at me!
  • 1. lit. "don't extinguish my eyes". That's not exactly the same meaning, but the general idea is there
  • 2. it's about a Soviet-era adaptation of Winnie the Pooh, apparently

Author's comments:

A typical example of the appalling bad taste the band could wallow in.
I can imagine why not that many people volunteered to answer the request.
But what the heck, it was fun to translate.

Now you know why there’s not too many volunteers to translate it, hah?

Лишь официанту дам гроши — he is giving very lousy tips to the waiter
I’ll rest for a while, not my cup of tea Regular smile and I take it green, no sugar, no milk Regular smile

Well that sure is no Bulgakov, but that's still Russian of a sort Regular smile

How would you translate that? "don't kill me" or something?

petit élève    Mon, 25/06/2018 - 14:50

frankly I don't get the idea. How can "don't extinguish the fire in my eyes" turn into beat/punish/hurt/maul ?

Igeethecat    Mon, 25/06/2018 - 15:13

Don't try to get rid of me????

petit élève    Mon, 25/06/2018 - 16:12

would "don't give me the cold shoulder" do?

Igeethecat    Mon, 25/06/2018 - 16:20

Yes, I think it will work. I am not very familiar with this kind of Russian, but I believe this is what they meant.

Виннипых и Приторчок - это из анекдота.
-- Пятачок - Винни-Пуху:- Пpивет Винни!- Я тебе не Винни,а Винни-ПЫХ!- ...ну тогда я Пpитоpчок!.
We sat there like Beavis and Butt-Head --- Teeth smile

Oh well, I suppose I could make it sound as gruesome as the original, but scatology is not my favourite kind of humor.

Относиться с брезгливым высокомерием и пренебрежением -> sounds good to me. "wrinkle one's nose at someone" is pretty close.
It alludes to the stink too Regular smile
