What is a "sonora"?

It can mean a 'Soundtrack' when it's combined with "Banda sonora" (Basically an OST) or something resonant or loud. In Mexico, it's very popular to add a name (or state in some cases) + Sonora for band names.

Phantasmagoria has given you a good and clear explanation. (Well done, Ellen).
"La sonora dinamita" is an expressive title that seems to imply "very 'sonora', fantastic".
"La sonora matancera", 'no mata'; it is 'The band from / the sound of Matanzas, Cuba'.

Thank you. I tried doing my own research but could not find any information.

Thank you. The two of you put different pieces of the puzzle together to makes a clear picture. I know what son is, so I was imagining 'players of son music' specifically.

BTW I love your avatar.

Just to add, in Mexico it can also be used as a sort of tribute name if the band has ties or comes from the federal state of Sonora.
