Malu 'ighinu

Su cane at mussigadu a su ‘ighinu,
at nadu chi mi la faghet pagare
proite pensat chi bi l’apo ‘etadu,
e cando mai podet pensare custu?
Su cane at fattu su dovere suo.

At bidu zente intrande a domo sua:
sa domo est sa mia “e così sia!”.
At nadu chi fit intrande a saludare
pro narrer bonasera a masanotte.
Su limone e s’aranzu fit tocande,
attr’e che chi saludos a cust’ora!

Tando fit issu su malefattore,
pro cussu mancaiat totu sa frutta:
su muru bassu brincadu at e a intro.
Podes pensare a su ‘ighinu tuo:
malu puzone, tue fis su matzone!

Cuadi sa cara in d’unu rincore

bantos ‘e pedra podet isperare,
no isperet chi li manden sa gràtzia
cando si ponet mere de s’anzenu.
Malu fattore cun su muru bassu!

Brincadu at su matzone fura-pudda
cuadi sa cara in d’unu rincore
dimanda cando non ti serbit nudda
limone, aranzu, o siat chibudda.
Discùlpalu e càgliadi sa ‘ucca,
in donzi parte de su mundu est gai.

Tando fit issu su malefattore,
pro cussu mancaiat totu sa frutta:
su muru bassu brincadu at e a intro.
Podes pensare a su ‘ighinu tuo:
malu puzone, tue ses su matzone!

Cuadi sa cara in d’unu rincore
dimanda si ti serbit carchi cosa.
Su cane meu non cheret chi li tochen
s’aranzu e su limone de su mere.
Discùlpalu e càgliadi sa ‘ucca,
in donzi parte de su mundu est gai.

Bad Neighbour

The dog has bitten my neighbour,
he said that he’ll make me pay
because he thinks that I’ve incited it,
but how can he think so?
My dog did its duty.

It saw people coming into its house:
it’s my house, and so be it!
He said he was coming in to say hello,
yeah, to say “good evening” at midnight.
But he was touching my lemons and oranges,
certainly not to say hello at such an hour!

Then he was the malefactor,
that’s why all the fruit was missing:
he jumped over the low wall and got in.
You can think of your neighbour:
evil bird, the fox was you!

Hide your face in a corner,
ask, if you need something.
My dog doesn’t want anyone to touch
its master’s oranges and lemons.
Forgive it and shut your mouth,
in every part of the world it's the same.

Whoever touches what he shouldn’t touch
can only expect harsh treatment,
he can’t expect to have grace
when he takes possession of other people’s things.
Malefactor, with a low wall!

So the chicken-stealer fox has jumped:
hide your face in a corner,
ask, when you need anything,
be it a lemon, an orange or an onion.
Forgive it and shut your mouth,
in every part of the world it's the same.

So it was he the malefactor,
that’s why all the fruit was missing:
he jumped over the low wall and got in.
You can think of your neighbour:
evil bird, you are the fox!

Hide your face in a corner,
ask, if you need something.
My dog doesn’t want anyone to touch
its master’s oranges and lemons.
Forgive it and shut your mouth,
in every part of the world it's the same.
