Opium (English translation)

English translation

I'm afraid of my earthenware dreams
that burn in silence in my head
on endless fields1 of stone.
And I'm thinking [of]
The body ecstatic in his2 body
The dark prayers of the dead
I use my mind by way of scenery
and I sleep.
And the wind carries me into the wool
of African fabric and dresses.
I'm sliding on a Bohemia carpet.
to the glass shards under my feet.
[they] will never be able to reflect
the sound of enchanted violins. Dreaming
  • 1. "nappe" also means "tablecloth" or "patch" (of fog), the idea of a continuous surface covering something. It's a rather uncommon use of the word
  • 2. "dans" really means "inside", which is a bit surprising, but I suppose it could be understood as two lovers embraced

Thanks. I did state it is not a translation.

Your version is close to GT and I struggle with both although, I did get imagery and used some phrases as you can see.

I don't understand "earthenware dreams" - what do you think it means?
Also, did you mean extatic = ecstatic?

No wonder it's close to GT. It's just a succession of metaphors. There is no general guideline, no story told, hence no adaptation possible.

Earthenware is a delicate material, it can break easily. That's about the only allusion I can detect. I see no French-specific subtelty here.

I put footnotes on the two words used in an uncommon way. The rest is just as meaningful in French and in English, in my opinion.

ecstatic -> oops sorry, French spelling Regular smile

Lol, I still do not get the lyrics - must be me

Maybe the song means something to the singer and her friends, but to me it's just a collection of strange metaphors.

She thinks of love and death then pictures an African landscape in her mind then says that dreams and music save her for the pain of living, basically.

I think, given the name, it might be drug induced dreams. It also may mean that video does not represent the lyrics as there is no darkness that you described. Thanks a lot for the explanation.

Oops... It's actually a guy singing. Serves him right for showing nothing but chicks in the vid Tongue smile
That explains the "body in body" thingie, though that's a rather crude way of evoking lovemaking, if you ask me.
Well yes, I suppose all these dreams could be induced by opium. I don't see any obvious allusions to drugs in the lyrics though. Floating on a carpet maybe, but that could be due to other reasons.

Well, so you won and now nobody will be upset that my version is not a translation as I deleted it. Lol. And nobody would find it under my name so unless I am banished from here as well, I am posting my version on yours... Tongue smile
You flirt and dance in front of me, enchanting as a Salome,
You need no veils, you know this game
My fingers run over the keys,
The sound of enchanted violins join in
Music warns of your indifference that'll come to be.
Your beauty overwhelms me, fleeting as this romance is,
I drown in your kiss, my heart well knows what it will miss.
When silence comes and you are just a fragment from my dreams.
Naked, I will face the loneliness abyss,
My heart in shattered shards of glass under my feet
The sound of enchanted violins...Dream

I can tell you your version sounds classy in French. It was a pleasure to translate.

merci beaucoup.
Lol, now, both of our efforts will exist in obscurity. But, it was a pleasure. Btw, what is your name?
