Toute latitude (English translation)

Free rein

Oh, it was so hot.
Phoebe at full blast.
We sought shelter in the forest.

A thousand paths crisscrossed us.
A thousand Odysseys at our doorstep.
The cohorts of boredom were in full retreat.
We knew they would be back.

We had a free rein and all our life ahead.
Free rein and all our life.
No commitment of any kind,
and a single motto: "Whatever"

Oh, we wriggled like eels
in the winding streams.
Boy's hands, girls' hair,
and we sought each other in the woods.
Some would find each other, other wouldn't.
But who would dare laugh about it?
Even today, who would dare1

We had a free rein and all our life ahead.
Free rein and all our life.
No commitment of any kind,
and a single motto: "Whatever"

But since
But since

Oh, one day nothing dies any longer.
All the water stagnates in the well.
You come back to the forest alone
seeking shelter, like yesterday,
even though the sun paled,
veiled by all the days after.
You come back alone to the forest.

We had a free rein and all our life ahead.
Free rein and all our life.
No commitment of any kind,

We had a free rein and all our life ahead.
Free rein and all our life.
No commitment of any kind,

and a single motto: "Whatever"

but since...

  • 1. I would, actually. Thinking of soldier children, for instance. Or just of kids working in the field from age 7

Author's comments:

This song is ok, but frankly I don't like this album. I find most of the songs either abstruse or plain boring. A middle-aged middle-class guy in a mildly interseting mid-life crisis.
